Game 6 Boxscore
LOS ANGELES -- Chico State continued its prolific offensive production to defeat Cal State Dominguez Hills 10-4 and win the 2006 California Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball Championship.

Four different Wildcats tallied 2 hits apiece as part of the 13-hit attack that allowed Chico score at least 10 runs for the fifth time in six games.

Highlighting Chico's balanced production were rightfielder Carl Fairburn and catcher Trevor Weedon. Fairburn's 3-run home run in the fifth inning gave the Cats an 8-0 lead and all but broke the Toros' back. Weedon capped a highly productive two week period with 2 hits and the 2 runs, including a solo home run in the ninth inning to cap the Chico scoring.

Second baseman Robby Scott had 2 hits, 2 runs and an RBI, and left fielder Daniel Code produced 2 hits, including a double, and 2 runs for the Cats. Aaron Demuth ripped an RBI double in the third inning that extended Chico's lead to 2-0. The Wildcats scored in each frame from the second to sixth innings.

Pitcher Billy Spottiswood gave Chico a fine effort, limiting a powerful CSUDH lineup to 3 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts over 6 and two-thirds innings to improve to 9-5 on the season.

Mateo Marquez had 2 hits, including a solo home run, and 2 runs to lead the Toros, which were playing their fourth game in less than 48 hours.

The Wildcats (39-19) won their third CCAA title all-time and automatically qualified for the NCAA Division II Championship West Regional, which begins Thursday, May 18. Cal State Dominguez Hills (33-18) finished the tournament with a 2-2 record, both losses to Chico, and will await word along with fellow tournament participants Cal State L.A. (32-14-1) and UC San Diego (35-24) on if it receives one of four regional at-large berths. Mesa State of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) earned the other automatic berth on Saturday after winning the RMAC title.

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State Dominguez Hills kept its title hopes alive with an 11-9 win over UC San Diego in an elimination game of the 2006 California Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball Championship.

The Toros banged out 17 hits to earn all but one of their runs tin advancing to the championship round in their first tournament appearance.

Designated hitter Chris Hunter led the way with 3 hits, including 2 home runs, and 3 runs batted in. Freshman shortstop Cody Puckett also homered as one of his 3 hits to go with an additional run scored and 2 RBI. Third baseman Kyle Stanley went 2 for 5 with a home run, 2 runs scored and 4 RBI.

UC San Diego catcher David Morehead had 2 hits, including his 12th homer of the season, and RBI to lead the Tritons.

CSUDH pitcher Ryan Owen went 7 innings, allowing 6 runs (5 earned) on 8 hits and a walk while striking out 8 to earn the victory. Fred Medina pitched a perfect final inning to notch his second save of the year.

Cal State Dominguez Hills (33-17) earned a tournament rematch against unbeaten Chico State. The Toros must beat the Wildcats twice on Saturday to win their first CCAA Championship since 1994. First pitch is set for 12 noon. UCSD dropped to 35-24 on the season and will await word on a possible NCAA Division II playoff bid.

Game 4 Boxscore
LOS ANGELES -- Chico State exploded for five runs in the seventh inning and held on for a 7-5 win over UC San Diego in game four of the 2006 California Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball Championship.

Wildcat relief pitcher Marcus Martinez allowed 2 runs in the ninth inning before retiring the side on a strikeout and fly out to center field to end the contest. With the win, the Wildcats (38-19) advance to the championship round on Saturday to face the winner of the elimination game between UCSD (35-23) and Cal State Dominguez Hills.

UCSD allowed Chico to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning when second baseman Garrett Imeson committed a two-out error that allowed baserunners Jerin Harper and Daniel Code to score.

The Tritons closed the gap to one run in the fourth inning on a two-out single by Jonathan Erickson and a subsequent error by Wildcat center fielder Chad Williams that allowed David Gomez to score. Gomez had doubled to left-center with one out.

UCSD went ahead 3-2 in the top of the seventh on freshman Matt Cantele's 2-run home run to right-center field, his 14th jack of the season. Chico would answer in its half-inning, however.

Catcher Trevor Weedon doubled for the second time in the game and advanced to third on Williams' sacrifice. Carl Fairburn then doubled to score Weedon to tie the game at 3-3. After intentionally walking Harper, UCSD starter Trevor Decker gave way to Byron Grubman who enticed Code into a groundball that shortstop Josh Tanner threw away, allowing Fairburn to score, Harper to go to third and Code to reach second.

Chris Sweeney then delivered the major blow, a 2-run triple to right field. UCSD coach Dan O'Brien then called on Michael Kearney to stop Chico's momentum, to no avail. Aaron Demuth greeted Kearney with a double to right-center that plated Sweeney and gave the 'Cats an insurmountable 7-3 lead.

Chico pitcher Ben Buker pitched 7 strong innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits and 4 walks with 5 strikeouts to earn the win and improve to 6-3 on the season. UCSD's Decker took the loss to fall to 7-6.

Game 3 Boxscore
LOS ANGELES -- Cal State Dominguez Hills pounded out 14 hits en route to a 9-0 win over tournament host Cal State L.A. in an elimination game of the 2006 California Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball Championship.

Each member of the Toros' offensive lineup finished with at least one hit, led by second baseman Houston Hernandez' 4 for 5 effort that included a double. Hernandez also stole 2 bases, scored 4 runs and drove in another.

CCAA Player of the Year Jason Klug gave the Toros a 2-0 lead with a 2-run homer in the first inning. He finished with a pair of hits, 2 runs and 2 RBI.

Klug's early blast was all starting pitcher Chris Borchers needed. Borchers, named CCAA Pitcher of the Year on Wednesday, showed why, as he scattered 7 hits and a walk while striking out 6 on his way to a complete-game shutout. The win improved Borchers to 9-2 on the season.

Isidro Perez ripped a run-scoring double in the third inning and Kyle Stanley belted a 2-run homer in the fifth to push the Toro lead to 5-0. An inning later, Hernandez singled to drive in Fred Medina for CSUDH's sixth run after Medina tripled to left with one out. The Toros capped the scoring with three unearned runs in the final frame.

Cal State Dominguez Hills improved to 32-17 on the season and kept its CCAA title hopes alive. Cal State L.A. fell to 32-14-1 but remains in contention for an NCAA Division II Championship berth.

UC San Diego 8, Cal State L.A. 4
Game 2 Boxscore
LOS ANGELES -- UC San Diego parlayed eight Cal State L.A. errors into an 8-4 win over the tournament host in the second game of the 2006 California Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball Championship.

Despite being outhit, 9-6, UCSD prevailed on the strength of seven unearned runs. The Tritons were led offensively by CCAA Freshman of the Year Garrett Imeson, whose two-run home run in the decisive sixth inning provided the final margin of victory.

Imeson's blast followed a three-error play that allowed UCSD to take a 6-4 advantage. With UCSD's Josh Tanner on first and John Roth on second base with one out, CSULA second baseman Jack Roche misplayed a tailor-made double play ball that center fielder Fernando Franco then overran, allowing the Roth to score. Franco then threw the ball away, allowing Tanner to score. One batter later, Imeson capped the damage with his third home run of the season.

Damian Fante went 2 for 4 with a run and RBI for UCSD, and teammate Jose Navarro scattered 8 hits with no walks and 4 strikeouts over 6 innings to pick up the win. T.C. Geach pitched 3 shutout innings in relief to earn the save.

R.J. Brown led the Cal State L.A. attack with 3 hits, including a towering 2-run homer to right-center in the fifth that gave the Golden Eagles a brief 4-3 lead.

UC San Diego improved to 35-22 and will meet Chico State on Friday at 3 p.m. in a second round winner's bracket contest. Cal State L.A. (32-13-1) will take on Cal State Dominguez Hills in an elimination game at 11 a.m.

Game 1 Boxscore
LOS ANGELES -- Perennial power Chico State scored early and often en route to a convincing 13-3 win over top-seeded Cal State Dominguez Hills in the opening game of the 2006 California Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball Championship held at Cal State L.A.

The Wildcats capitalized on solid hitting and spotty Toro defense to take a 10-1 lead after four innings and were never threatened. Chico held a 2-0 lead after half an inning, thanks to singles by Chad Williams and Carl Fairburn, a sacrifice fly from Daniel Code and an RBI single by Chris Sweeney. Chico's proficiency off CSUDH starter Jason Garcia continued in the 2nd inning, as the 'Cats tallied four runs on two hits, an error, two wild pitches and a passed ball.

Chico maintained its assault in 4th inning, scoring four runs on as many hits. Williams again led off with a single and scored on a Fairburn double. After Garcia thit Jerin Harper with a pitch, Code doubled to drive in Fairburn and advance Harper to third. A Sweeney sacrifice fly scored Harper, and Jesus Luna's two-out single brought home Code with the Wildcats' 10th run of the contest, more than enough for Chico starter Nick Bryant.

Bryant scattered 10 hits and a walk in allowing 3 runs (1 earned) while striking out 4 over 6 innings to improve to 8-2 on the season. Garcia, who exited in the 4th inning, took the loss (5-3).

Several Wildcats were responsible for the offensive outburst. Williams finished the day with 3 hits and 3 runs scored; Fairburn had 3 hits, including 2 doubles, 2 runs and 2 RBI; and Sweeney went 2- for-4 with a run and 2 RBI. The game was Chico's fourth straight with 11 or more runs scored.

Chico, the defending West Region Champion, improved to 37-19 on the season in advancing to the second round of the winners' bracket where it will play at 3 p.m. CSUDH saw its nine-game winning streak end as it dropped to 31-17 on the year. The Toros play the first elimination game of the tournament on Friday at 11 a.m.
